Sailing into Bratislava with AmaWaterways, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Compared to Vienna and Budapest, this city doesn’t always get the same hype—but wow, does it deserve it! The moment I stepped into the Old Town, I felt like I had stumbled into a fairytale, with its cobbled streets, colourful buildings, and an undeniable charm that instantly won me over.

But what really made me fall in love? The statues.
Meet Bratislava’s Most Unforgettable Locals
All throughout the Old Town, bronze figures stand frozen in time—each with their own story, a little bit of history, and a whole lot of personality.
Čumil – The Man at Work

First up, I nearly tripped over Čumil, aka “The Man at Work”—a grinning guy poking out of a manhole like he’s just waiting to surprise someone. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh, wave, or ask if he needed help!
Locals have different theories about him—some say he’s a lazy worker from the communist era, others joke that he’s peeking up skirts (cheeky, but hey, he does look amused!). Either way, rubbing his head is supposed to bring good luck—so of course, I gave it a try!
Schöner Náci – The Gentleman of Bratislava

A little further down the street, I met Schöner Náci, a man in a top hat, forever tipping it to passersby. But this isn’t just any statue—he was a real person!
Schöner Náci (real name Ignác Lamár) was known for wandering the streets of Bratislava, dressed to the nines, handing out roses, and spreading joy. It’s said he had a sad life, but he never let it show—he just wanted to make people smile. And honestly? Standing there in front of his statue, it worked.
Napoleon’s Soldier – A Toast to the City

Then, just as I was getting used to these unexpected statues, I spotted a soldier leaning casually on a bench, looking like he belonged in a painting rather than on the streets of Bratislava.
He represents Napoleon’s army, which once occupied the city. But the real story? One French soldier supposedly fell in love with a local girl and stayed behind, becoming a winemaker. Talk about a happy ending!

Final Thoughts
Bratislava may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Europe, but let me tell you—it’s full of surprises. The history, the charm, the quirky details that make you stop and smile… this city has a way of winning you over when you least expect it.
And the statues? They may be bronze, but they bring the city to life.
