Will our friendship survive this trip?

Travel Together: The Ultimate Test of Friendship
Because let’s be honest… travelling together is the ultimate test. You learn things. Habits. Sleep schedules. How people handle jet lag… or wine… or missed turns.
Two of us… very well travelled.
Two of us… just getting started.
What could possibly go wrong?
And yet… somewhere between the laughter, the unexpected moments, and the shared experiences… something shifted.
There are trips you remember and then there are journeys that quietly shift something in you. This was one of those.
Paris: A Beautiful Pause Before the Adventure

We began in Paris, easing into the experience with two beautiful days that felt more like a pause than a stopover. Wandering through the halls of the Louvre Museum, taking in centuries of art and history, then standing in awe of the striking, modern design of the Louis Vuitton Foundation a building that feels like it belongs both in the future and completely in its surroundings.
South Africa: Where the Journey Truly Begins
And then… everything shifted.
South Africa welcomed us with open skies and a completely different rhythm.
Luxury Safari Life at Matswani Lodge

At Matswani Lodge, time slowed. Days were shaped by the movement of wildlife… mornings with coffee as animals passed through, evenings filled with unforgettable culinary experiences that somehow felt both elevated and deeply connected to the land.

Johannesburg: Reunions, Culture, and Culinary Adventure
In Johannesburg, we reconnected with friends we hadn’t seen in years… the kind of reunion that reminds you how small the world really is. And yes… we leaned into the experience, tasting local game at Carnivore Restaurant…giraffe, crocodile, and more… each bite a story of place and tradition.

Kruger National Park Safari: A Moment That Changed Everything
But it was in Kruger National Park where something quietly unforgettable happened.
We came around a corner and saw two massive elephants, standing back-to-back… completely still. At first, we thought they were standing vigil. Between them, a juvenile lay on the ground, and the moment felt heavy… almost sacred.
And then… we saw him.
The smallest one.
Climbing. Nudging. Playing.
Completely unbothered by the stillness around him, he was doing what toddlers do best… exploring, pushing boundaries, and yes… mildly annoying his napping older sibling.
It was such a simple moment… but it hit deep.No matter where you are in the world… whether two legs or four…curiosity, connection, and family look so beautifully the same.
Wild Days & Unexpected Mischief
Our days at Kruger Gate Hotel were filled with those kinds of moments. From dawn to dusk safaris… to the unexpected entertainment of monkeys who had clearly mastered the art of “strategic theft.” Watching them sit high in the trees, enjoying their stolen sandwiches, fully aware the staff (and their slingshots) couldn’t reach them… it was equal parts chaos and brilliance.
Moments That Take Your Breath Away
And the journey kept unfolding…
Standing atop Table Mountain, seeing Cape Town stretch out in every direction… one of those views that makes you pause and just take it all in.
Riding horseback alongside herds of zebra and wildebeest… feeling, for a moment, like you were part of something much bigger.
Watching a lion pride in their natural environment… raw, powerful, completely unfiltered.

Connection Beyond Words
Evenings filled with the energy and joy of local children’s dance groups… storytelling through movement, connection without words.
Learning about the land… the cradle of history… where every landscape holds a deeper meaning.
Slowing down with a glass of local wine… letting the surroundings sink in.
From Ocean Depths to Botanical Beauty
Heading out onto the ocean, coming face-to-face with sharks in a way that feels both exhilarating and humbling.
Then shifting pace entirely… into a botanical safari… where the beauty is softer, quieter, but just as unforgettable.
A Deeper Connection to the Land
And behind the scenes, our spouses experienced something equally meaningful… a farming management journey, connecting directly with the land through a farm-to-market approach. Not trophy hunting, but understanding sustainability, food systems, and the deeper relationship between people and place.
Twenty-five days… that were truly life-changing.
More Than a Trip
This wasn’t just a trip.
It was contrast… connection… perspective.
From Elegance to the Wild
From Parisian elegance to the raw beauty of the bush. From world-renowned museums to moments you couldn’t plan if you tried. From long-awaited reunions to quiet realizations in the wild.
And the Real Answer…
And perhaps the biggest takeaway…
Not only did our friendship survive…
it came home even stronger.
And yes… for everyone who keeps asking… we are, in fact, still friends 😉
(Though next time… we might pack a little less… because the only thing we overdid was the food, the wine… and the laughter ??)
